Why did I decide to do this again?

I decided to start a blog when I was snowed in the house for a week. I thought it would be a great way to create some memories to look back on. Lately though, there has been no time whatsoever for this. So I will keep this blog up though in case one day I get the time for it again.

Nathan has been good though. We completely switched to cloth diapers and I have to say I like them so much more than disposables. I think everyone should get one or two and give it a shot. I wish I would have decided this to begin with. The breastfeeding is starting to takes its toll though. Ever since I started school it has gotten harder and harder. I'm going to try to make it to the sixth month mark though, we'll see. Well this is about all the time I have to write today.

Fuzzibunz it is!

So after trying out a lot of diff. brands of diapers (still have 2 more on the way), we bought a big pack of Fuzzibunz. I still have a Nifty Nappy and a Kawaii on the way but I knew I wanted to buy a bulk package that comes with everything I need so the majority of our stash will be Fuzzibunz. I love Fuzzibunz! They are SUPER soft and very absorbent. They fit Nathan great because there are 3 ways to adjust it (which works perfect for his tiny waist and chunky thighs) and they are still pretty trim. I would have loved to get half Rumparooz and half Fuzzibunz but they didn't make a bulk package where I could get everything (wipes, sprayer, wet bag, etc.). I love Rumparooz too but they are slightly more expensive and we were trying to still stay within a reasonable budget. (Which we already went over lol) So I guess I'll build up a stash of those slowly.

Very disappointed w/the Bumgenius. I thought I was going to love them. At first glance, I thought I did. Then opening them and looking at everything; well Rumparooz is just so much better. (It looks like Bumgenius tried to copy a lot of what Rumparooz has), but I don't know which came out first so I could be wrong. And then the packaging says that I have to wash these SIX times SEPARATELY to reach max absorbency and b/c it's a dark color. Now that's a joke. Screw getting more of those, it's too much of a hassle. So I'm happy with our decision, now time to get some Baby Legs lol. I never thought I would get so excited about freaking diapers lol. I soo have no life anymore! haha.

Research

Last night I finally broke open my Research Methods textbook and it reminded me that I need to start working on my own research to get ready for Grad. School. But there are SO many topics that I'm interested in I don't know where to start. So I thought writing a post and brainstorming might help. So FYI, this post will prob. only help me, maybe.

The first research topic I am really interested in has to do with children and vaccines. I know there are many mothers out there who choose not to vaccinate their children and studies have been done relating health issues and vaccines. What I want to know is why some parents choose not to vaccinate. I have a neutral stand-point on the issue so that would make this research unbiased. I guess I just want to look more into the research and studies done to see if they are that credible or if they could be biased on the issue. Of course a mom whose child had a negative reaction to a vaccine is going to be completely against it. But what about other scientists who didn't have that experience? Just curious.

Another topic I'm interested in is breastfeeding versus formula feeding. Of course breast milk is better, but what about extended breastfeeding? Other topics of interest include sleep training and parenting styles. I need to come up with lots of ideas for research so any suggestions would be very helpful :)

Cloth Diapering: Day 1

So last night I decided that I would try out the cloth diapers that I received from TCDF and a couple I had purchased. I'm sure many ppl. think I'm crazy for even attempting this, except for the friends that I know who already do it and have had success with it. (Which inspired me by the way to try it anyways, so thank you ladies!) But frankly I have better things to spend $60 a month on. When you live on one income, you have to find ways to cut costs any way you can and cloth diapering seems like an easy way to do it. So now on to how things are going....

The first diaper I tried yesterday evening was a Rumparooz G2 w/snaps. I only used the newborn insert b/c it was way too bulky otherwise and I really don't need that much absorbency unless it's at night. The snaps and figuring out what rise setting he needs is tricky at first but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it the more I use it. I really like Rumparooz, they seem to fit him well. Which is kind of becoming an issue with some other ones. They also hold a ton too, esp. w/the 6R soaker thing. It was hard to stuff though, but that's prob. a user error since I'm new to all this stuff.

The second one I tried was a size Small Blueberry diaper. I didn't have Blueberry inserts so I used 2 Thirsties inserts to test this one out for overnight. I thought this diaper was going to fit better than the Rumparooz b/c it was sized and it did fit better BUT it's almost too small for him. Which I was really disappointed about b/c I love Blueberry diapers, they're incredibly soft. If I can find some of these in one-size I will get more. So it worked awesome for overnight. I just wish it fit him better. Nathan is very long but his thighs are kinda chunky so it's going to be hard to find something that fits him perfectly.

The third one (the one we're using right now) is a Thirsties pocket duo something. (I can't remember what it's called) I am really not impressed. They don't fit Nathan very well (even though it is a size one) and I feel like it is going to leak, even though it hasn't yet. It just looks that way. BUT I just love their inserts. They have a microfiber one then a hemp/cotton one that snaps to that one.
Well I just changed his Thirsties diaper, and it did leak. I think it was my fault though because I adjusted the rise (I had to unsnap one) and it fits better now. We'll see how this goes.

I still have an OsoCozy All-in-One to try. It is super trim, just like a disposable. So I don't think it is going to hold much but we'll see. I have a Nifty Nappy on the way and I can't wait to try it. I'm also ordering a BumGenius and a Fuzzibunz to try once I get some money this week. I'm hoping I will like either the Bumgenius or the Fuzzibunz best b/c they have some awesome package deals that comes with everything you need. I also might buy a Kawaii just for fun because at seven dollars a diaper I have to just try it and see how it is. And if I hate it, I'm only out seven bucks.

I haven't switched to cloth wipes yet, but I have some. I still have to wash them and make my own solution until I get some solution. I only have one more sample packet of laundry detergent too so once I'm out of these diapers I'll have to use up my disposables until the detergent comes in.

The verdict so far? I'm def. going to switch to cloth. I also like how Nathan's bottom isn't as red anymore since I've been using these. I thought a little redness was normal, apparently not. Once I find a brand I'm in love with then I'll be all set. I think Fuzzibunz might be it for me b/c of how you use the elastic in the legs to adjust the rise. I'm glad I didn't start this until now though because you really don't know what kind of diaper you are going to like until you put it on your baby. I wouldn't of been very happy if I bought a ton of diapers and then they didn't fit him right.

School, Nathan, Etc.

I have a baby that never wants to nap lately. He wants to stay up forever and by the time he'll fall asleep he's so tired he can't sleep unless he's on me. I really don't think I like this habit I've started. For the record, I'm just not one of those "Attachment Parent" types. I don't nurse on demand (except when he was first born), I don't co-sleep, I believe cry-it-out is necessary sometimes, and I only wear him occasionally. I just don't see how babies learn to be independent when they are stuck on their mom 24/7. But then again, that's just my opinion.

But then I look at how precious he is sleeping on me and right now, in this moment, I could care less about starting this bad habit that I've started. After all, parenting is really just trial and error. You try stuff, and if it doesn't work you just try something else.

I seriously underestimated how tough this semester is going to be. I have no idea how I'm going to keep up once he starts crawling and getting into stuff. More on that later. Well I guess it's time to watch a movie w/my hubby.

Public or Private?

So I decided to start this blog because frankly I'm tired of writing notes on Facebook. I made a blog last semester on here for my Gender and Woman's Studies class but deleted it after the class was over. But I kinda had fun making it so I thought this might be more interesting than posting notes on Facebook. I had a "blog" (I guess you could call it that) on Myspace for years until my account got hacked into. Now I'm left with the decision on whether to make this public or private. I'm a pretty open person so I'm not really concerned in that aspect. I just don't know if I really want that many people in our personal life. But we'll see what I decide ;) (and i guess if you're reading this then I decided to make it public)
